The SD850 IS was first announced in May 2007 as a replacement for the Powershot SD700 IS. It constitutes only a relatively subtle upgrade.

Visually the SD850 is virtually indistinguishable from the older model, and there are only a handful of modifications to the specification of the camera. Most notably the sensor now records 8MP images instead of 6 and the resolution of the 2.5″ screen has been increased to 230,000 pixels. The ‘digital heart’ beating in the SD850 is now the latest generation of Canon’s imaging processor, the DIGIC III. With the new processor there come a couple of new features too: Face Detection and the useful Auto ISO shift option.

Features:-

* 8.0 million Effective pixels

* Widescreen (16:9) stills recording

* Canon’s DIGIC III image processor, iSAPS, 9-point AiAF and Face Detection

* ISO 1600 and optical IS for flash-free indoor shooting

* 16 shooting modes

* Wide viewing angle 2.5″ LCD screen (230,000 pixels)

* My Colors photo effects

* 4x (35-140mm equiv.) zoom

* 30fps VGA movies with time lapse mode

Design:-

# Front: – The front of the Canon PowerShot SD850 IS is branded on the left side with a textured metal Canon logo and a printed model name. The right side of the camera’s front is a little busier. The optical zoom lens takes up most of this side. The lens sits flat with the rest of the camera body until it is turned on: it then extends in three segments. Each segment has a shiny chrome ring around its edge.

# Left side:-The left side of the SD850 doesn’t have any features. There are dark, medium, and light silver panels and two tiny screws.

# Back: – The left side of the back features a 2.5-inch LCD screen surrounded by a darker silver-colored panel. The panel unifies the LCD screen with another viewing tool, the optical viewfinder, directly above it. To the right of the optical viewfinder are two small LED indicator lamps. Just right of these is a small power button with its own LED.

# Top: – The shutter button is on the top of the Canon PowerShot SD850 IS. It is mildly domed, outfitted in chrome, and surrounded by a zoom ring that hardly moves at all. On the left side of the top is an “Image Stabilizer” label. Beneath the label are five holes that make up the speaker grill.

# Right side:-The right side has a chrome wrist strap eyelet in the center that curves up ever so slightly. A niche beneath it makes stringing the strap a little less of a chore. Near the top is a plastic door held on by a thin rubber strip. It covers the A/V out port on top and the USB port on bottom. Behind it is a tiny space big enough for the tip of a fingernail to pry the door open.

# Bottom: – From the bottom, users can see the slight wedge shape of the SD850. The wedge is interrupted by the fat panel for the LCD screen. Near the right side is a quarter-inch metal tripod socket surrounded by little bumps to keep the camera from scratching on a tripod mounting plate.

Photo quality: – Photo quality was very good on the SD850 IS. The camera took well-exposed photos, with pleasing, accurate colors. Sharpness is right in the middle: not too sharp, not too soft (and this can be adjusted if you desire). Noise is minimal until you hit ISO 400, with the ISO 800 setting being usable for small prints (ISO 1600 on the other hand, is not). Purple fringing was not a problem. The negatives in the image quality department include noticeable corner blurriness and severe redeye, both of which are common in the ultra-compact class. While there’s not much you can do about the blurriness (you won’t see it in all but the largest prints, though), you can use the tool in playback mode to get rid of the redeye.

Performance: – Camera performance is excellent. The SD850 is ready to shoot in about a second, which is above average. Focusing times were very good, even in low light situations. Shutter lag wasn’t an issue, and shot-to-shot delays were minimal. While the burst rate isn’t terribly high, the SD850 can keep shooting at 1.3 frames/second until your high speed memory card fills up. Battery life was average in the ultra-compact group and, like all Canon cameras; the SD850 supports the USB 2.0 High Speed standard.

This camera is a great little convenient camera, which is able to be concealed easily, and taken about anywhere because it easily slips into a purse or pocket. It’s a great camera for taking indoor portraits with flash, as well as outdoor photos. It is not good at stopping action.

Pictures of kids and pets running around will often be blurry because of the 1/60 sec. shutter speed. If you need to take low-light or action/sports photos, you would be better off purchasing a cheap DSLR. The only reason I don’t give this camera 5 stars is because of the noise at higher ISO’s.

Tourist Information on Wakefield

The Wakefield borough comprises more than forty towns and villages, including woodlands and countryside, and the principle city has a population of almost 80,000 people.

The history of the city dates back to the Middle Ages, and much time and care has been devoted to preserving and excavating the city’s archaeological treasures. But the numerous museums, heritage centres and historical sites do not detract from the city’s vibrant, modern atmosphere.

The thriving nightlife, cultural facilities and top quality restaurants make the city a popular place to visit, and the £100million regeneration plans are sure to further increase tourism to the area.

History

Wakefield has existed since the medieval era, and gained industrial importance from its cloth-dealing industry. Coal mining provided much employment in the area, and Wakefield was hit hard by the closure of the pits during the mid- to late twentieth century.

Caphouse Colliery, the oldest working mine in the country, has since been converted into the National Coal Mining Museum, providing tours several times a day, exhibitions and educational events.

Sandal Castle, immortalised by the rhyme ‘The Grand Old Duke of York’, is the ruin of the castle at which the Duke of York was defeated during The War of the Roses, and is open to the public today.

Art Galleries

The Wakefield Art Gallery is home to a vast collection of paintings and sculptures, dating from the sixteenth to the twentieth century. Local sculptors, Henry Moore and Barbara Hepworth, are well reflected in the gallery’s collections. The gallery is close to the city centre and located in a nineteenth century town house.

The Hepworth will replace this gallery in 2008, as it is believed The Wakefield Art Gallery is not able to display the works to their best advantage.

The Yorkshire Sculpture Park is based in 200-year old landscaped gardens, and comprises four exhibition areas, showcasing a variety of sculptures and art installations.

Theatres

The Wakefield Theatre Royal and Opera House comprises three levels and seating for 500 people. The building is Grade II listed Victorian, and retains much of its original dramatic ambience and acoustics. The theatre is incredibly successful, with an annual turnover of £1million, and presents a busy programme of drama, comedy, musicals and lectures. As with many theatres, its most popular production is that of the annual Christmas pantomime.

The Wakefield Cycle is the performance of 32 plays, based on Bible and folk stories, in various locations around the city over 32 days. The ‘cycle’ is an ancient British tradition, but Wakefield’s is one of only four remaining. No dates have yet been set for 2007.

The Stagecoach Theatre Arts School stage performances twice a year.

Restaurants

The Cow Shed is the sixteenth century, Grade II listed building that inspired Joanne Harris’s novel, ‘Chocolat’. The restaurant serves contemporary grilled food and offers a choice of indoor and outdoor seating. Catering for up to 60 people is available.

The Kaye Arms serves contemporary British cuisine and snacks, with an extensive, international wine list. The restaurant is family-run and has been trading for forty years.

Rinaldi Ristorante Italiano is an Italian fine dining restaurant, serving traditional Italian cuisine and an extensive choice of specials. Other Italian fine dining restaurants include Valentinos and Bella Roma.

Spice Cottage and Aggrah are popular Indian restaurants that serve quality food at reasonable rates. Thai Kitchen’s prices are higher, but its dishes are authentic Thai that have been praised by critics and customers.

Pubs/Bars

The Westgate Run is a 500-yard stretch, that forms a popular (and notorious) pub-crawl.

Harry’s Bar is one of twenty on The Westgate Run, voted ‘Pub of the Season’ in Spring 2006 by CAMRA, and listed in Good Beer Guide.

The Redoubt is another real ale bar, and regarded as the start of ‘The Run’. The pub is separated into snugs, lounges and games room, and staff are said to be friendly and welcoming. The Union is another place to start, and serves a wide selection of beers, wines and cocktails.

Escobar is a more upmarket establishment, with higher prices and playing host to live music events and DJs in the evenings. Mex is a reasonably priced cocktail bar, and Pink Lizard is an upmarket cafe-bar.

Nightclubs

Club Ikon is one of the most popular clubs in the city, and offers trance and hard house, including a Ministry of Sound night. There are separate nights for under-18s and over-21s, but the majority of nights are for the 18+ crowd.

Mustang Sally’s is a popular student club, presenting cheesy pop and commercial dance. ICE nightclub is also loved by students, and offers techno, tech-trance, hardstyle and house music most nights, and r’n'b, hip-hop and funk on others.

With a capacity of 1400, Club Havana is the largest of the club, bar and lounge complexes in the city. The club is open every night, and presents 70s and 80s retro, soul and funk.

Zeus is the city’s most popular gay club, offering chart music and sing-along classics.

Shopping

Wakefield’s markets have been in existence since 1204, and there are currently eight of them. Regular markets trade in food, electricals, new and second-hand clothing, and much more. Specialist markets held at various times throughout the year include a Farmers Market and a Victorian Market. There is a second-hand market on Tuesdays and a Car Boot Sale on Sundays.

The Ridings Shopping Centre comprises 90 stores, including major retailers such as Miss Selfridge and Marks and Spencer. There is a multi-kiosk food court with family entertainment and seating for 300 people, secure parking, and a car hand wash and valet service.

Carlton Lanes Shopping Centre includes 50 stores, a multi-kiosk food court and secure parking.

Sports

The Wakefield Superbowl comprises 28 ten-pin bowling lanes, an amusements area, a cafe and licensed bar; and provides different special offers every day. F1 Indoor Karting is another choice for a family day out, and is open seven days a week.

Knottingley Sports Centre is one of five leisure centres in the city, and comprises a large pool and licensed snack bar. There are athletics and martial arts classes, and fitness facilities. Lightwaves Leisure Centre is larger, and comprises a leisure pool with wave machine and slides, and facilities for badminton, squash and five-a-side football.

Pontefract Golf Centre is an ideal course for beginners and those seeking a more relaxed game. Spring Mill Golf Course offers tuition for children and the more experienced.

City Tourist Information to York

York was once the capital of the country, and boasts a breathtaking history and wealth of restored medieval buildings and streets. The city gave its name to the county in which it resides, and is home to 13,000 people.

But York is much more than a beautiful, ancient city, and is home to a vibrant cafe culture and array of fine dining restaurants. The shopping facilities are plentiful, and there are more independent retailers represented here than in any other modern city in the country. The city even boasts a busy nightlife, with a wide selection of pubs, clubs and live music venues.

York’s creative spaces and venues are another good reason to visit, and the art installations housed in St Mary’s Church are a unique tourist attraction in themselves.

With dozens of museums, sporting venues and restaurants, hundreds of shops, and quality hotels and B’n'Bs on every street, York attracts thousands of tourists every year and rewards every one of them!

History

The ancient city of York has a more exciting history than any other area of the UK. The city was founded in AD71, and was the site of Constantine the Great’s coronation as Roman Emperor. The city’s decline in importance during the Industrial Revolution meant that ancient buildings were not raised to make room for factories and mills, and an abundance of medieval structures still exist today.

The Jorvik Museum is one of fifty museums and heritage centres in the city, and explores the Viking history of the area. Viking streets have been reconstructed for an underground tour, and there are masses of archaeological finds and exhibits.

The National Railway Museum, The Castle Museum, The York Dungeon and The Richard III Museum are just some of the others.

The city is also home to the largest Gothic church in the country, a thirteenth century church and numerous other medieval ruins.

Art Galleries

York Art Gallery is home to oil and canvas artwork, watercolours and ceramics from the fourteenth century to the present day. The collection is separated into six themed areas: Morality, Devotion, Places, People, Stories and Modern Aproaches; and there are regular temporary exhibitions.

York St Mary’s is a desanctified medieval church that is used to house a different art installation each year. The installations are inspired by the building, and each adds something different to its ambience. The installation for 2007 will explore the relationship between the viewer, the artist and the natural world, and is being developed by Keiko Mukaide.

The Artspace is a studio and art gallery, with new exhibitions every six weeks.

Theatres

The Grand Opera House is an elegant, restored, nineteenth century building, hosting performances of drama, dance, comedy and music. The theatre is said to be the largest in Yorkshire.

The York Theatre Royal seats almost 1000 people and presents a programme of drama, comedy, musicals, live music and stand-up comedy. The theatre is currently being renovated but is still open for business.

Friargate Theatre is home to a Christian theatre company, and regularly showcases small-scale touring productions.

Restaurants

The Biltmore Bar and Grill is located in a desanctified church, serves grills and drinks in its bistro, and traditional dishes on its mezzanine. The interior is modern and chic, and prices are a little above the average.

Rarity offers meat and fish dishes, and a wide selection of red, white and rose wines, champagnes and vintage ports.

The Mogul has received glowing reviews from customers and critics for its Bengali cuisine and warm atmosphere. The restaurant has been trading for fourteen years, and offers a catering service.

For high quality Italian food in traditional, upmarket surroundings, and with a view of York Minster, La Vecchia Scuola is the ideal choice.

Pubs/Bars

York is known for an abundance of pubs, and many are interesting historical buildings. Ye Old Starre Inn has a tenth century cellar and numerous ghost stories. The pub trades in a range of beers and ales, with regularly alternating guest beers.

The Lighthorseman is a bar and 4* B’n'B, which is apparently the single remaining Victorian bar in the city. Real ale, food and bar snacks are available.

CAMRA awarded the eighteenth century, The Blue Bell Inn, an award for its ‘outstanding pub interior’, including restored nineteenth century fixtures and fittings.

Montey’s Rock Caf?s a rock-themed bar; and Harkers is a nineteenth century ex-bank, popular with young and old professionals.

Nightclubs

The Gallery presents pop and party anthems, hip-hop and r’n'b, soul, funk, indie and rock’n'roll seven nights a week. The club comprises four areas and a food stand.

Ziggy’s is the city’s main alternative club, and popular with students. Drinks are cheap and the dress code is smart-casual. Music is largely nu-metal, indie and rock, and there are 70s and 80s nights.

Toffs comprises a large, open dancefloor in one room, and a cafe-bar in the other, with York’s largest VIP lounge upstairs. Music is mostly chart, party and drum’n'bass.

Fibbers is a cafe, restaurant, bar, nightclub and music shop, with live music every night.

Shopping

York city centre is a pedestrianised network of backstreets, cobbled walkways and medieval streets, lined with curiosity shops and unique stores. Coppergate is the place to find the major high street chains, and Swinegate is home to designer boutiques and restaurants.

Monk’s Cross is the city’s newest shopping centre, and comprises all the leading retailers, an interactive play feature for children and 1000 free parking spaces. Clifton Moor Shopping Centre is home to 34 stores and 3000 parking spaces.

The McArthur Glen Designer Outlet trades in surplus stock, and designer goods retail at 50-75% of the RRP. Current retailers include Dolce and Gabbana, Paul Smith and Armani.

Sports

Emperors Gym boasts state of the art cardio-vascular equipment and fitness facilities, athletics classes, a large pool and private parking. Thirsk Squash Club and Abbey Leisure Centre are just two more of the city’s many sports and leisure centres.

There are three go-karting tracks in the city, but F1 Racing is the only one with indoor facilities. The venue has a capacity of 200 people, a licensed bar and lounge, and TV, pool table and amusements.

Fulford Golf Club is one of nine courses in the city, and has hosted tournaments such as The Benson and Hedges International and the Murphys Cup. The club asks that players are members of clubs affiliated to the Golfers’ Union.

? These remote areas can be lonely forests, where forest workers, or perhaps working professionals in the fields of mining, earthworks and structural engineering fields who work in locations miles from the nearest phone.
